In the older neighbourhoods — Professorville, Old Palo Alto, parts of Crescent Park — the wine cooler has usually been dropped into an opening that was cut for something else. A 15-inch unit in a gap left by a trash pull-out, with a filler panel in front of the grille, will run continuously and never reach set point. That is the single most common thing we find in this city and it is an installation fault, not a machine fault.
In the newer remodels the units are properly specified and properly vented, and the faults are ordinary: sensors that have drifted, fans that have worn out, dampers on dual-zone cabinets. Those are cheap repairs on good machines and worth doing.
