Tall wine column that had been drifting warm for weeks. He found the condenser fan seized and a control board that had been running the compressor flat out to compensate. Fan and board replaced with genuine OEM parts, and he stayed to watch it pull down before he left.

Wine cooler not cooling
The number climbs and stays climbed. There are six things that cause it and they are not equally likely — most of the time it is heat that cannot get out, not cold that is not being made.

Where it should be
Wine storage runs between 45 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. 55°F is the long-term storage set point. Below about 45°F corks dry and shrink; above about 65°F the wine ages faster than it should.

The five real causes
1. The condenser cannot reject heat
This is the majority of calls. A wine cooler sits at floor level and breathes through a grille at the bottom of the door. Over three or four years the coil mats with dust, and in a house with a dog it takes one. A matted condenser raises head pressure, the compressor runs longer and longer, and the cabinet loses the bottom of its range first. It will hold 60 for months before anybody calls.
The same symptom comes from cabinetry. A front-vented unit fitted behind a solid toe-kick, or a free-standing unit built into a closed opening, has never had a chance. We measure the discharge air at the grille, and if it is hot the answer is airflow, not refrigeration.
2. A fan has stopped
Two fans matter. The condenser fan moves air across the coil; when its bearings go, head pressure climbs and you get the same symptom as a dirty coil. The evaporator fan moves cold air into the cabinet; when it stalls, the plate keeps getting cold, frost builds on the rear wall, and the bottles at the front stay warm. People describe that second one as "it freezes at the back and does nothing at the front", and it is one of the cheapest repairs there is.
3. The sensor has drifted
Thermistors and NTC probes lose accuracy with age. The control then holds its reading perfectly and the wine sits several degrees off. The display is not lying, it is measuring an air sensor that is now wrong. Resistance measures against a published curve, so this is a definite test. It is also the reason we put a calibrated probe on the middle shelf before touching anything.
4. Start components on the compressor
A compressor that clicks every twenty to forty seconds and shuts down is nearly always the start relay and the overload protector, not the compressor itself. They are measured, replaced as a pair because they fail as a pair, and the running current is checked afterwards to prove the compressor is healthy.
5. The sealed system
A slow refrigerant leak gives a cooler that recovers overnight and drifts through the day, gradually getting worse over weeks. A restriction gives frost at one point on the evaporator and nothing beyond it. Both are real repairs with real costs, and both need the four causes above ruled out first — because topping up a system that leaks fixes nothing and hides the fault for a month.
Two things worth doing first
Pull the toe-kick grille off, look at the coil, and look at whether anything has been built in front of it. If the coil is grey and furry, that alone can be the whole fault. Vacuum it and give the cooler 24 hours.
Leave it four hours with the door shut. When you call, tell us what the panel says and what the shelf says. Those two numbers narrow the diagnosis before we arrive and they are the first thing we would have measured anyway.

Not cooling — common questions
Why is my wine cooler not cooling but the light still works?
The light is on the door circuit and tells you only that the unit has power. The most common causes of a powered cooler that will not cool are a matted condenser, a stalled fan, a failed start relay or a refrigerant leak — in that order of likelihood.
My wine fridge is not cold enough but it is not warm either.
A unit that holds 60 to 62 and cannot get lower is almost always a heat-rejection problem rather than a refrigeration failure. Clean the condenser, check the grille is genuinely open, and check nothing has been built in front of it. That fixes a large share of these calls.
How long should a wine cooler take to reach temperature?
From a warm start, several hours to most of a day depending on cabinet size and how full it is. Loading a warm cabinet with warm bottles adds a lot of thermal mass. If it is still climbing after 24 hours, something is wrong.
Can I fix a wine cooler that is not cooling myself?
You can clean the condenser and clear the grille, and that is worth doing. Anything involving the sealed system requires recovery equipment and a licence. Fans, sensors and relays are repairs, not maintenance.
Is ice on the back wall normal?
A light frost that clears on its own is normal. A solid sheet that grows is a defrost fault — usually the heater or its thermal cutout — and it will slowly take the cabinet temperature up as the ice insulates the evaporator.
