Two completely different machines sold in the same aisle under the same words. Which one you own decides what temperature it can reach, why it failed, and whether repairing it makes any sense.

What each one actually does

Twenty degrees below the room
A Peltier module has a cold face and a hot face. Current moves heat from one to the other, and the only thing that stops the cold face going arbitrarily cold is that the hot face has to get rid of its heat into the room. The bigger the difference between the two faces, the harder that becomes, and the module starts conducting heat backwards through itself. In practice that puts a hard ceiling of roughly eighteen to twenty-two degrees below ambient on a domestic wine cooler.
Which is why a thermoelectric cooler in a Peninsula kitchen in September behaves like a broken machine. The room is 82, the cabinet reaches 62, and the customer reasonably concludes something has failed. Nothing has. In February the same unit holds 50 and everyone is happy.
It also explains the failure mode. Everything about a thermoelectric unit depends on the hot side being able to dump heat. Block the heat sink, stop the fan, or push the cabinet against a wall, and the module runs hotter and hotter until it fails. Ninety per cent of dead Peltier modules died because a fan stopped months earlier and nobody noticed, because the unit was silent to begin with.
What we tell people
Compressor, without hesitation. Long-term storage means holding 55°F in August as reliably as in January, and only one of these technologies does that. Vibration is a genuine concern, and it is managed with proper compressor mounts, not by giving up the temperature.
Thermoelectric is a reasonable choice under about 30 bottles, in a room that stays cool, where silence matters more than the last few degrees. Keep the back clear and check the fan is still turning once a year. That one habit is the difference between ten years and three.

Technology questions
How do I tell which one I have?
Look at the back. A thermoelectric unit has a finned aluminium heat sink and a small fan, and it never cycles — it just hums. A compressor unit has a black cylindrical compressor at the bottom, and you can hear it start and stop.
My thermoelectric cooler will not go below 62. Is it broken?
Probably not. Thermoelectric cooling pulls roughly twenty degrees below ambient. If the room is 82°F, 62°F is the machine performing to specification. Moving it out of the sun or into a cooler room is the only thing that changes the result.
Is a thermoelectric wine cooler worth repairing?
It depends on the failure and the unit. A fan or a power supply, usually yes. A dead Peltier module on a 12-bottle countertop unit, usually not — the parts and labour approach the value of the cooler and we will tell you that before doing the work.
Which is better for long-term storage?
A compressor unit, for one reason: it can actually reach and hold 55°F in a real kitchen through a Bay Area summer. Thermoelectric wins on vibration and noise, and those matter, but not as much as holding the number.
Do thermoelectric coolers use less electricity?
Not usually. Peltier cooling is thermodynamically inefficient and the module runs continuously. A modern compressor unit cycles and often uses less over a day, especially in a warm room.
