Danby thermoelectric that could not keep up once the room hit the eighties. He measured the room, measured the cabinet, and showed me the unit was doing exactly what it is designed to do, which is hold about twenty degrees below ambient and no more. Moved it off the sunny wall and the problem stopped.

Ambient is the whole story up here
Every wine cooler works by moving heat out of the cabinet and into the room. In a Napa or Sonoma kitchen in August the room is doing its best to move it straight back. That does not break a healthy machine, but it removes all the margin — and most of the units we open have been running with very little margin for years without anyone noticing.
The pattern is unmistakable. A cooler holds 55 through the winter, drifts to 58 in June and 62 by the middle of August, then quietly recovers in October. Nothing failed in July. The condenser has been marginal since 2023 and summer is simply when it stops being able to hide.
The second factor is thermoelectric units, which are common in valley houses as second cabinets in a den or an office. They cool to roughly twenty degrees below ambient and no further. In a room that reaches the high eighties they will hold around 68, which is not a repairable fault — it is the technology reaching its limit. Knowing that before a technician starts replacing parts saves real money.

What this business does now
This site used to be about wine rooms and cellar construction in the valley. It is not any more. We repair and service wine coolers and wine refrigerators — free-standing, under-counter, built-in columns, dual-zone, thermoelectric and compressor. If you need a room built, we are not the right call.
Wine country questions
Do you service wine coolers in Napa and Sonoma?
Yes. Napa, Yountville, St. Helena, Rutherford, Oakville, Calistoga, Sonoma, Glen Ellen, Kenwood, Healdsburg and Santa Rosa are all inside our normal coverage.
Do you build wine cellars up here?
No. This business repairs and services wine coolers and wine refrigerators. Cellar construction, wine-room cooling and cabinetry are not services we offer any more.
What temperature should a wine cooler hold in a hot valley summer?
55°F, the same as anywhere. The difference is that a hot valley kitchen makes it much harder, so ventilation, condenser condition and the climate class of the unit matter more here than they do on the coast.
My cooler holds temperature all winter and drifts every summer.
That is an ambient and heat-rejection story, not a component failure. In Napa summers a marginal condenser or a restricted grille that goes unnoticed from November to May becomes obvious in August.

Drifting through the summer?
Model, what the panel says, and what a thermometer on the shelf says. That is usually enough to know what we are walking into.
What people say
The cooler in our bar area was running hot because it had been built into a cabinet with no ventilation gap at the back. He documented it, cut a rear vent with the cabinetmaker, and the compressor now cycles instead of running continuously. That was the actual fix.
Compressor was starting and stopping every thirty seconds. He measured the start relay and the overload and both were bad. Replaced them together, checked the current draw after, and showed me the reading.
