Door seals and condensation

Fog on the glass, water in the base, mould on the gasket, a door that stopped pulling itself shut. Six causes, and from the kitchen they look identical. Each one has a test that takes a minute.

01 Six causes

What is actually happening

Each of these produces moisture, and each one has a different fix. The test column is what we do on site, and most of it you can do yourself before calling.

Gasket has taken a set

Magnetic gaskets are a foam core in a vinyl jacket. Left compressed for years, the foam stops springing back and the seal stands off the frame by a millimetre or two. Worst at the top hinge corner, which is where the door twists.

TestClose the door on a dollar bill and pull. If it slides out freely anywhere around the perimeter, that section is not sealing.

Door sagging on a worn hinge

Glass doors are heavy and the hinge bushings wear. A few millimetres of sag lifts the gasket clear at one corner and the door stops self-closing in the last inch of travel. A door resting a hair open is a permanent cold-air leak and a permanent condensation source.

TestOpen the door to about four inches and let go. It should close itself. If it stops and hangs, the hinge is worn or the cam is out of position.

Door heater circuit open

Most glass-door cabinets run a low-wattage heater wire around the door frame to keep the metal above dew point. When it fails open, moist room air condenses on the cold frame and the glass fogs. It is not a seal fault, and replacing the gasket will not fix it.

TestFeel the frame around the glass after the unit has run an hour. It should be very slightly warm. Stone cold, with fog forming, points at the heater.

Drain blocked, tray overflowing

Condensate runs down the rear wall into a drain and out to a tray above the compressor, where the heat evaporates it. Block the drain and the water backs up into the cabinet floor. People report this as a leak; it is almost never a leak.

TestStanding water in the base of the cabinet with a dry floor underneath is a drain, not a leak. Water on the kitchen floor is something else.

Door reversed without moving the cam

Field-reversible doors have a closing cam that has to be swapped with the hinge. Missed, the door rests fractionally open forever. We see this on units that "have never worked properly since we moved them".

TestSame self-close test. A reversed door that will not pull itself shut has almost always had this missed.

Humidity in the room, not the cabinet

TestWipe the glass. Outside surface wet means room humidity. Inside surface wet means the cabinet.

02 The physics

Dew point, in one paragraph

Air holds a certain amount of water depending on how warm it is. Cool it below its dew point and the water has to come out somewhere — on the coldest surface available. In a wine cooler that surface is the glass, the door frame or the rear wall of the cabinet. Everything on this page is either air getting in where it should not, or a surface being colder than the designers intended.

That is why the frame heater exists. It is not there to warm the wine; it holds the metal around the glass a degree or two above the dew point of your kitchen so the moisture stays in the air. It draws a few watts and it is the single most misdiagnosed component in this category, because a fogged door looks exactly like a seal problem.

It is also why door openings matter. Every time the door opens, the cabinet takes in a volume of room air carrying room humidity. In a busy kitchen in a damp coastal town that adds up, and a cabinet with a healthy seal and a healthy heater will still show some moisture. Frequent, brief openings are much better than infrequent long ones.

Condensation questions

Why is there condensation inside my wine cooler?

Warm moist air is getting in and meeting cold surfaces. That means a gasket that is not sealing, a door that is not closing fully, or a door being opened frequently in a humid room. On glass-door cabinets a failed frame heater produces the same result on the glass without any air leak at all.

Is a little water in the bottom of the cabinet normal?

A small amount after heavy use is normal and should drain away. Standing water that does not clear is a blocked drain line, which is straightforward to clear once the cabinet is accessible.

Should a wine cooler be humid inside?

Yes, more so than a food refrigerator. Around 50 to 70 per cent relative humidity keeps corks from drying. Some cabinets manage it passively with a water tray or a ceramic brick. Very dry cabinets dry corks; very wet ones grow mould on labels and seals.

Can I replace a wine cooler door gasket myself?

On many units the gasket is a push-fit dart into a channel and it is genuinely doable. The part that matters is what comes after: a new gasket on a sagging door still will not seal, so the hinge has to be checked and set at the same time.

There is mould on the seal.

Clean it, but find out why. Persistent mould on a gasket means persistent moisture, which means an air leak, a blocked drain or a failed frame heater. Cleaning alone brings it back within weeks.

Water pooling in the bottom of the Liebherr and a fog on the inside of the glass every morning. The gasket had taken a set on the hinge side and was not touching at the top corner. New gasket, hinge adjusted, and the humidity problem went away. He showed me the dollar-bill test so I can check it myself.
