What the inside looks like

Ten places inside a wine cooler where the temperature is won or lost. This is the equipment we work on and what goes wrong at each point — not a gallery of finished kitchens.

Dual-zone under-counter, door open

Two set points, one cabinet, one evaporator. The display between the zones reports air temperature in the cold path — not the temperature of the wine. On this architecture a single damper decides whether the two numbers on the panel mean anything at all.

Condenser behind the toe-kick grille

The coil that has to reject every watt of heat the cabinet removes. Four or five years of dust and pet hair between the fins raises head pressure and takes the bottom of the temperature range away. Nothing has failed electrically; the machine simply cannot get rid of its heat.

Sealed-system pressures are the last test, not the first. By the time gauges go on, the condenser, both fans, the sensor, the door and the drain have already been cleared. Reaching for gauges first is how a fan fault turns into a compressor quote.

Two-zone control panel

55 above, 45 below. Those are settings and sensor readings, and both can be perfectly honest while the wine on the shelf sits six degrees away from either. A calibrated probe on the middle shelf is the only thing that settles it.

Thermoelectric heat sink and fan

A Peltier module sandwiched between a cold plate inside and this heat sink outside. There is no compressor and no refrigerant. When the hot-side fan slows or the sink is pushed against a wall, the module runs hotter every day until it fails.

Magnetic door gasket

A foam core in a vinyl jacket with a magnetic strip. Left compressed for years it stops springing back, and a millimetre of stand-off at the top hinge corner is enough to produce warm wine, fogged glass and mould on the seal at the same time.

Shelf out, cabinet loaded

The load is part of the machine. Bottles packed hard against the rear wall block the air channel that carries cold into the cabinet, and the result — cold plate, warm bottles — is indistinguishable from a failed fan until somebody looks.

Front-vented cabinets breathe entirely through the grille at the bottom of the door. Whatever the cabinetmaker puts in front of that grille decides how the machine performs for the rest of its life, and a decorative toe-kick panel is the single most common cause we find.

Full-height built-in column

Two independently set zones, a heated glass door frame, and a cabinet that has to come out on rails for service. Columns need a specified free area at the top or bottom of the cabinet run; close it off with trim and the unit holds 60 forever.

What comes out of the van

A meter, a calibrated probe, a set of drivers, a brush, and the fan motor that turns out to be the answer more often than anything else. Gauges stay in the van until every one of those has ruled its component out.
