A Sub-Zero wine unit is not a modified refrigerator. It runs its own compressor and a dedicated evaporator per zone, which is why a 424 can hold the upper zone at serving temperature and the lower one at cellar temperature without the two fighting each other. It also means a fault in one zone tells you almost nothing about the other, and diagnosing it as though it were a single system is how people end up replacing a working part.

The other thing worth knowing about these units is the door. Sub-Zero wine columns use the same magnetic gasket family as the refrigeration line, on a glass door that is considerably heavier. Hinge wear shows up earlier here than on a solid door, and the first symptom is almost never the door — it is a warm upper zone, or condensation forming on the inside of the glass in a Bay Area summer.
Each zone has its own evaporator and fan. When one zone climbs and the other is steady, the fault is on that zone alone — its fan, its thermistor, or the damper. We measure both zones against a calibrated probe before opening anything, because the panel reports the sensor and not the bottle.
The condenser sits behind the grille at the top of a built-in column and it collects dust from the whole kitchen. A blocked condenser raises both zones together and makes the compressor run without cycling. This is the most common call on these units and it is maintenance, not a repair.
The glass door is heavy. As the hinge bushings wear, the door drops a few millimetres and the gasket lifts off the frame at the top corner. You get a warm upper zone and condensation on the glass long before anyone thinks to look at the hinge.
A fan that has started to drag moves less air across the coil. Temperature holds at the sensor and fails at the shelf, and the unit often runs quieter rather than louder, which is why it goes unnoticed.
A brownout or a surge can leave the board reading correctly and switching incorrectly. We measure at the board before condemning it, since a board is the most expensive wrong guess available on these units.

Usually yes, if the cabinet and the sealed system are sound. Gaskets, fans, thermistors and boards are all serviceable parts on these units, and the sealed system on a well-kept column commonly outlasts them. We tell you which of the two you are looking at before anything is ordered.
That points at the upper zone alone: its evaporator fan, its thermistor, or air blocked at the shelf. It is not a compressor fault, because a failing compressor takes both zones with it.
Almost always the door seal, and behind that the hinge. Warm humid air is reaching the cold glass because the gasket is no longer meeting the frame at one corner.

Mould forming on the door seal and a musty smell in the cabinet. He replaced the gasket, cleaned and cleared the evaporation tray, and explained that the drain being blocked was what caused the smell, not the wine.
Our EuroCave held the lower zone fine but the upper zone crept to the low sixties. He put a probe in on the shelf, watched it through a cycle, and showed me the upper evaporator fan was stalling. Fan swapped, both zones now sit where they are set. He also explained why the door display and the shelf temperature never read the same.
